The itinerary is only part of the cruise.
The ship matters. The cruise line matters.
And the cabin matters more than you might think.
Choosing a cruise isn't just about where the ship goes. The cruise line, ship, cabin, dining, entertainment and overall atmosphere can completely change the experience.
I'll help you sort through those choices and find the cruise that fits the way you actually want to travel.

Finding the right cruise starts
with more than the itinerary.

THE CRUISE LINE
What kind of experience do you want?
Relaxed or lively? Adults-only or family-friendly? Great dining, big entertainment, lots to do, or somewhere quieter to unwind? The right cruise line sets the tone for the entire trip.

THE SHIP
How do you want to spend your days?
The newest or biggest ship isn't automatically the best fit. Dining, entertainment, pools, nightlife and the overall atmosphere can completely change your experience onboard.

THE CABIN
Is the upgrade worth it?
Inside, ocean view, balcony or suite? The right answer isn't always the most expensive one. I'll help you decide which cabin fits your trip, and where an upgrade is actually worth the money.
What kind of cruiser are you?
There isn't one "best" way to cruise. Different cruise experiences are better fits for different kinds of travelers.
Here's where I'd start.
ADULTS-ONLY + SOCIAL
Virgin Voyages
GREAT FIT IF
You care about great food, cocktails, nightlife and a modern, less traditional cruise experience. Dining is a real strength, there's plenty happening onboard, and no kids changes the entire feel of the ship.
THINK TWICE IF
You love traditional cruise entertainment, formal nights or a quieter, more conventional cruise atmosphere. Virgin has a personality, and that's exactly why some travelers love it and others don't.
BIG SHIP + BIG ENERGY
Royal Caribbean
GREAT FIT IF
You want the ship itself to be part of the vacation. Royal Caribbean is known for big entertainment, lots of dining choices, pools and activities, with plenty happening from morning through night. It's especially strong for families and multigenerational groups where everyone wants something different.
THINK TWICE IF
You prefer smaller ships, quieter spaces or a more intimate onboard experience. The newest ships can feel like destinations themselves, which is a huge selling point for some travelers and exactly what others are trying to avoid.
RELAXED + ELEVATED
Celebrity Cruises
GREAT FIT IF
You want a beautiful ship, strong dining and service, and a more sophisticated onboard atmosphere without moving into true luxury cruising. Celebrity is especially good for couples and adults who want plenty to enjoy onboard without needing constant activity.
THINK TWICE IF
You want waterslides, nonstop activities or a big family-focused experience. There is entertainment and plenty to do, but the overall feel is more relaxed than high-energy.
DESTINATION + IMMERSION
River Cruising
GREAT FIT IF
You want the destinations to be the focus of the trip. River cruises put you close to cities, towns and cultural experiences, often with multiple stops and plenty of time ashore. They're especially appealing if you like the ease of unpacking once but still want to explore somewhere new almost every day.
THINK TWICE IF
You're looking for big-ship entertainment, lots of onboard activities or days spent lounging by a resort-style pool. On a river cruise, the ship is more your comfortable home base than the destination itself.
Where is it worth spending more?
Not every upgrade makes a better vacation. These are some of the places where I think the extra spend can make a difference, and where it sometimes doesn't.
01
THE CABIN
Will you actually enjoy the upgrade?
A balcony can completely change a cruise if you'll actually use it. A suite can be worth the splurge when the extra space, service or included perks matter to you. But the most expensive cabin isn't automatically the best choice. I'll help you look at how you'll use the room, where it's located and what you're actually getting for the extra money.
02
THE ITINERARY
What are you really paying to experience?
Two cruises can look similar on paper and deliver very different trips. Look at how long you're actually in port, whether the ship docks or tenders, and what you can realistically do with the time you have. Sometimes the better itinerary is worth paying more for, even when the ship isn't the newest or flashiest.
03
EXCURSIONS
What experiences are actually worth booking?
You don't need an organized excursion in every port. Sometimes the right choice is a private tour, sometimes it's a ship excursion, and sometimes it's simply getting off and exploring on your own. I'll help you decide where an excursion adds something special, and where you can save the money for something you'll enjoy more.
04
BEFORE + AFTER
Your cruise doesn't have to start at the pier.
I almost always recommend arriving at least a day before your cruise. It gives you breathing room if travel doesn't go as planned and takes the stress out of embarkation day. And when you're sailing from somewhere worth exploring, adding a night or two before or after can turn your departure city into part of the vacation instead of just the place where you board the ship.
